Royal Naval Long Service & Good Conduct. (Victorian issue) John Hancock. Chief Boatman in Charge. H.M. Coast Guard. Born 1st July 1850 in Tiverton, Devon. Served with the Royal Navy for 10 years serving between 1st July 1868 to 11th November 1878. Served on HMS Achillies as an Ordinary seaman. Later serving on a number of ships, he was later promoted to leading seaman serving on HMS Warrior. He was later promoted to the rank of able seaman serving on HMS Duke of Wellington before his last posting with HMS Valiant before joining HM Coast Guard as Boatman. records show his last promotion was Chief Boatman in Charge.
