Awarded to member of His Majesties Navy, 215771 Petty Officer Frederick William Hackworthy, Royal Navy. Africa General Service, Clasp Somaliland 1908-10, (215771. F.Hackworthy . A.B. HMS Diana.), 1914-15 Star, (215771. F.Hackworthy. L.S. R.N.). British War Medal and Victory Medal, (215771. F.W. Hackworthy.P.O. R.N.). Together with Royal Naval Long Service & Good Conduct, ( 215771. F.W.Hackworthy. Ldg.SMN. HMS Centurion). A long service group covering two monarchs awarded to naval recipient Petty Officer Frederick William Hackworthy. He was born on 3rd December 1883 in Exeter in the county Devon. In civilian life his occupation was porter. Records show recipient's period of engagement was 12 years enlisting 3rd December 1901. Serving in the Somaliland Campaign onboard HMS Diana Hackworthy was awarded the Africa General Service Medal with the clasp “Somaliland 1908-10” engagement serving as Able Seaman. Notes advise he was awarded his medal whilst serving on HMS King Alfred. Before then he served on a number of naval vessels. HMS Diana was a second class cruiser of 5,600 tons, launched in Fairfield in 1895. Carrying numerous armaments from 3 x 18 tone torpedo tubes armed with 11 x 6in guns. On the outbreak of World War One Hackworthy having been promoted to Leading Seaman was now serving on HMS Centurion. She was a battleship of the King George V class. HMS Centurion launched in November 1911 at 25,500 tons. She was attached to the 2nd Battle Squadron commanded by Captain Michael Culme-Seymour. Hackworthy was serving on HMS Centurion at the battle Jutland which took part in the biggest naval engagement of the war. Records show he received his Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct medal in February 1917. He was later pensioned of on the 8th October 1921, though notes on his service record show he was recommended for the Royal Fleet Reserve on 3rd November 1923.
