Awarded to Lieutenant Herbert Arthur Willis served formerly with the 3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade, Oxford Light Infantry and later Indian Army transferring to the Indian Army Officers Reserves awarded mention in dispatches. Indian General Service 1895 clasp Punjab Frontier 1897-98 (3480 PTE. H.WILLIS. 3d Bn. RiF: BDE.), British War Medal  & Victory Medal (2  LIEUT. H.A. WILLIS)and General Service Medal 1918-62 & MID Oak Leaf (LIEUT. W.A. WILLIS). Lieutenant Herbert A Willis was born in the Parish of Islington, Middlesex. Service papers indicate he enlisted on the 8th November 1894 at the age of 18 years, 2 months, joining the Rifle Brigade. He saw campaign service in India where he was awarded the Indian General Service 1895 medal with award clasp Punjab Frontier 1897-98. Medal confirmed in medal roll/service papers serving with the 3rd Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He later saw service with the Oxford Light Infantry with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant seeing service in World War One. Awarded British War Medal & Victory Medal both confirmed on medal roll. Further details show that he was also promoted to the full rank of Lieutenant. Then taking his discharge soon after in India in 1916 and he later was commissioned into the Indian Army. Following his transfer he was involved in the military campaign in Iraq, Mesopotamia, awarded the General Service Medal 1918-62, clasp Iraq award confirmed on medal roll. London Gazetted on the 9th September 1921 whilst with the Indian Army Reserves. In which Lieutenant Herbert Arthur Willis was mentioned in dispatches for distinguished and gallant service and devotion to duty during the Mesopotamian operational campaign.
